To Exploit Is to Be Exploited
As most of us seek power in one form or another, the hierarchical principle is established, the novice and the initiate, the pupil and the Master, and even among the Masters there are degrees of spiritual growth. Most of us love to exploit and be exploited, and this system offers the means, whether hidden or open. To exploit is to be exploited. The desire to use others for your psychological necessities makes for dependence, and when you depend you must hold, possess; and what you possess possesses you. Without dependence, subtle or gross, without possessing things, people, and ideas, you are empty, a thing of no importance. You want to be something, and to avoid the gnawing fear of being nothing you belong to this or that organization, to this or that ideology, to this church or that temple; so you are exploited, and you in your turn exploit.

The word Panspermia is derived from the greek words ‘pan’ (all) and ‘spermia’ (seeds), and basically means ‘seeds everywhere.’
The Panspermia theory states that life on Earth and other planets could be seeded by microbial life that has traveled through space inside comets, after being blasted off the surface of an inhabited planet by other comets and meteorites.

Directed Panspermia:
This is the intentional seeding of other planets by advanced Alien civilizations or even the human race in the future.
Ballistic Panspermia:
Rocks expelled from a planet’s surface by impacts from comets and meteorites serve as methods of transport for biological material from one planet to another within the same solar system.
Lithopanspermia:
Rocks expelled from the surface of an inhabited planet carry biological matter from one solar system to another inside a comet that impacts upon a planet, thus seeding life upon that planet.

Serpent Origins and the Real Origins of Freemasonry
This mysticism is indeed the great Masonic Secret, the Supreme Initiation…. It is old as is this world.- La Trahison Spirituelle de la Freemason,
J. Marques-Rivere
So, at the root of the secret is an electrobiological and chemical reaction
inside the mind often termed the kundalini.
This we now know to be linked
implicitly with the serpent from the internal process and vision, and
therefore being spoken of as serpent power. But are there any real links to
the world’s biggest secret society -
the Freemasons?
It is clear that the
serpent is, and has always been, a symbol of the Freemasons of which they
have been perfectly proud.
The question is:
How many of its members realize what its all about?
Origins
Abraham, the Israelite father of mankind, and Hiram of the Freemasons, are one and the same.
Both are based upon serpent worshippers with Indian Naga
or serpent deity backgrounds. A grand statement, but one that I am not alone
in making.
Flavius Josephus said in his History of the Jews:
Flavius Josephus said in his History of the Jews:
These Jews are derived from the Indian philosophers; they are named by the Indians Calani. Megasthenes, sent to India by Seleucus Nicator, also said that the Jews were called “Kalani” and that they were an Indian tribe.
Clearchus of Soli said:
“The Jews descend from the philosophers of India. The philosophers are called in India Calanians and in Syria Jews. The name of their capital is very difficult to pronounce. It is called Jerusalem.”
If Abraham as the father of the Jewish race is therefore a legendary figure
of India, then who is he, and did he exist at all? It’s time to upset
traditionalists.
The obvious person for an Indian Abraham is Brahma (A-Brahma) who just happens to have a consort and sister named Saraisvati 1 - which is amazingly similar to the name of the Biblical Abraham’s wife, Sarai. Abraham is said to have learned his trade in Ur, which is very close to the Persian border - being en route to India.
It is also a fact that the name of Brahma spread throughout this entire area - so much so that the Persians even adopted him as one of their deities. So, the very area where Abraham is said to have learned his priestly trade is the very area that the Indian Brahma was being spread and worshipped.

What more can we find within this area of the Chaldees?
The Chaldeans were called Kaul-Deva, and they were a priestly caste living in, among other places, Afghanistan, Kashmir, and Pakistan. (Kaul-Deva meaning the Shining Calani, hence these were enlightened Shining Ones, a group going back to ancient Sumeria and outlined in my book The Shining Ones.)

So Abraham/Brahma learned his trade among the Chaldeans, who were related to
the Indian subcontinent and were the Shining priesthood or enlightened
souls. In this respect, then “Abraham” was simply a title given to the high
priest or lord of the sect of Brahma. But if, as in ancient Egypt, he needed
to duplicate the life of the gods, then he, too, would have needed a
wife/sister.
The fact that Saraisvati was both Brahma’s consort and sister also relates to the Biblical account of Abraham.
The fact that Saraisvati was both Brahma’s consort and sister also relates to the Biblical account of Abraham.
But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.(Genesis 20:12)
This same pattern of hidden Gnosis would later become part of the Mary/Jesus
myth.
The complex twists and turns that modern writers such as
Dan Brown in
the Da Vinci Code seem to have to create to explain the seemingly peculiar
nature of Jesus’ relationship with Mary the Mother and Mary Magdalene, are
really quite remarkable. It is simple.
In the same way that Sarai is Saraisvati, she is also Isis, the greatest of Egyptian goddesses. Mary too is a duplicate of Isis. You see, Isis was the consort of Osiris, hence the wife part. She was therefore the mother of Horus the Savior - hence the mother of god.
But Horus was Osiris reincarnated,
so Isis was also his sister. Mary the Mother, Mary Magdalene the
lover/consort, and Mary of Bethany the sister are really and truly the
hidden aspects of a much older Gnostic tradition that has no literal element
at all! The three Marys are in reality three aspects of the one feminine
principle - the feminine trinity.
Of course, we could find ourselves in trouble here, as nowhere does it state that Mary of Bethany was the sister of Jesus. However, it does state that Mary of Bethany was the sister of Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, or more pertinently was Jesus, raised from the dead.
You see, in Egyptian mythology it was the role of the son of god and savior, Horus, to raise his father, Osiris, from the dead and in a sense resurrect himself (as Horus was Osiris resurrected).
However, Lazarus and Osiris are distinctly different names and so cannot be related. Still, although there is much debate on the exact etymology, many believe that there is a proven link. How?
The ancient Egyptian designation for Osiris was Asar or Azar. Now, when the Egyptians spoke of their gods they indicated them with “the” and so we would have had “the Azar.” This term “the” also meant lord or god, like the Greek word for God, The-os or Theos. One of the Hebrew terms for Lord was El and was applied to their many deities, such as El-Shaddai or El-ohim.
So when the Hebraic writers included Osiris in their myths, they put him in as El-Azar - the Lord Osiris. This, in the later Latin translation, was changed to El-Azar-us. This use of the “us” was the way that masculine names ended in the Roman language.

In fact, in Arabic, Lazarus is still spelled El-Azir, missing the
“us.” So we now have El-Azar-us, which reduced further into Lazarus. In this
way the Egyptian, or should we say much older mythos, became the literal
truth of the biblical record.
Horus, therefore, raised “El-Azar-us” or “El-Osiris” from the dead, just as Christ was to raise “Lazarus.” This story is an allegory of the sun god Osiris being reborn, but nevertheless gives us the remarkable fact that Mary of Bethany, as the sister of Lazarus, was in literary and esoteric reality, the sister of Jesus.
And so, as we find that Jesus and Mary were in reality based upon a much older Egyptian mythology, which itself stretches back even further in time to ancient Sumeria, we also find that the story of Abraham and Sarai is no different.

In the Koran (6:75), we find that Abraham’s father was called Azar (Osiris), and so Abraham was Horus, just as Jesus was Horus. Lo and
behold, we also discover (Luke 16: 22–25) that Lazarus himself rested in the
bosom of Abraham, just as Osiris, as the crippled god, rested in his
resurrecting son’s arms.
And it was this Abraham, this Brahma or Osiris, that is said to have spawned the very Children of Israel. Let’s take a look at Abraham’s sons and see if we can reveal the hidden serpent lineage or serpent secrets that we found elsewhere in The Serpent Grail.
Abraham’s son Ishmael, by Hagar, his maidservant, also had children who lived in India, or Havilah (land of serpents), as it is in Genesis. Both famous sons of Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac, have names that revert back to the worship of that Hindu serpent deity 2 Siva.
Ishmael is Ish-Maal in Hebrew, and in Sanskrit, Ish-Mahal means “Great Siva.” Isaac is Ishaak in Hebrew, and Ishakhu in Sanskrit - which means “Friend of Siva.” Most startling of all is the very name of Abraham himself, which could mean that Abraham was nothing other than a Naga King - Ab Ram actually means “exalted snake.”
Hiram, the famous Freemasonic and biblical builder of temples, was Ahi-Ram, and it is time to take a look at this mythical character.

Hiram and the Temple
Hiram of Tyre was a member of the Tribe of Naphtali, which had a standard of a serpent or basilisk. He was also said to be a son of the Tribe of Dan, which had an emblem of the serpent and the horse.
In The Woman’s Encyclopaedia of Myths and Secrets, Barbara Walker points out:
Writers of the Old Testament disliked the Danites, whom they called serpents (Genesis 49:17). Nevertheless, they adopted Dani-El or Daniel, a Phoenician god of divination, and transformed him into a Hebrew prophet. His magic powers were like those of the Danites emanating from the Goddess Dana and her sacred serpents… Daniel was not a personal name but a title, like the Celtic one.
Here we have a distinct conclusion, that Daniel of the Bible is related to
the very same Danu or Dana goddess of Celtic Europe, and that this goddess
is conclusively related to serpents - in this case, the serpens astrological
sign as worshipped by the Danites.
We also have confirmation that the Jewish
people collected their belief system from those around them. Thus far, as we
have gathered, they have melded the beliefs of India, Egypt, and now
Phoenicia into their own growing system.
According to the book of Chronicles, Hiram was skillful in the work of gold, silver, brass, timber, and, importantly, stone. According to the book of Kings, the Temple was prepared in stone before it was brought to the site - perhaps prefabricated somewhere else. It was said that neither hammer nor axe, nor any tool of iron was used in the building. So, how was it built?
Well, in Exodus, Moses is told to build an altar to the Lord without tools, lest he should pollute it, and it seems the same symbolism was utilized here in the building of the Temple. According to Rabbinical teaching, the prefabrication was performed by the Shamir, a giant worm or serpent that could cut stones. According to the Islamic accounts of Rashi and Maimonides, the Shamir was a living creature.
This is hardly likely, unless we understand this creature to be ourselves. What is more likely is that the idea of the wisdom of the “worm” (which evolved from the word worm for serpent anyway) or snake, Shamir, was used in the construction of the symbolic Temple of 3 man - a Gnostic belief.
It was fabled that serpent-linked Nagas escaped their country and took this deep and seemingly architectural wisdom abroad. This linking of the esoteric and underlying principles of self-illumination, manifested here in architectural symbolism, eventually gave rise to modern Freemasonry.
The “architect gods” such as Thoth or Hermes are linked strongly with the serpent wisdom, as we discovered in The Serpent Grail. Other references also link the Shamir to the snake, such as the Testament of Solomon, which calls it a “green stone,” like the Emerald Tablet, 4 which obviously provides further evidence for the Shamir to have been serpent wisdom.
Returning to Hiram we find that the name Hir-Am actually means “exalted head of the people” (Hir = Head, exalted, Am = people) - and is closely related to Abraham (Ab Hir Am).
However, it also has another and more telling meaning.
Ahi-Ram actually means “exalted snake.” So, in either meaning Hiram was the “exalted head” or “snake,” both meanings being paramount to the discovery of the thread of the snake cult and religious underlying beliefs - the mixture of the opposites within one’s own head as shown in the Serpent Grail.
Hiram was also believed by some (according to David Wood in his book, Genisis) to be descended from Cain via Tubal-Cain, who was said to be the only survivor of the “superior race” after the flood.

The race is supposed to be called Elohim (people of the “fiery snake”) or the “Shining Ones,” also known as the “serpent people.” This tale is derived from a text known as E or Elohim from around 750 B .C ., and also gives rise to the stories of the Dionysiac Architects - also linked with the Freemasons.
It is no wonder that the pillars of Hiram should be related closely to the worship of the snake. Rosslyn, and especially one of its mock temple pillars, is entwined with the symbolism of snakes, not just as a direct relation to the Norse myths of Yggdrassil, with its gnawing serpent, but as symbols of the religious power of the Gnostic serpent.
On the Secret Scroll discovered by Andrew Sinclair, one of the most important images is the sight of a large, coiled serpent beneath the Temple steps, with a crown, a pick, and a shovel, as if pointing towards the excavation of the Temple itself.
There is a legend that may back up Andrew Sinclair’s findings:
This Oriental legend tells how the Queen of Sheba was attracted to Hiram and that King Solomon became jealous. So jealous, in fact, that he plotted the death of Hiram. Molten metal used in the casting of a “brazen sea” was going to be used to kill Hiram, but he was saved by the “spirit” of Tubal-Cain - his ancestor - who is linked with serpent worship. He was saved, by the serpent, from death.Hiram threw his “jewel” down a deep well, but was then killed by Solomon’s assassins by a blow to the head. It was said that three masters later found the body and venerated it. The jewel was found and placed on a triangular altar, which Solomon then had erected in a secret vault beneath the Temple (Josephus, Antiquities V111, 3:4).What was the jewel of this builder, which caused so much veneration? Whatever it was, later crusader knights - under the guise of Knights Templar - were supposedly to dig furiously beneath the Temple to discover it.The Templars are believed to have dug for other items they (and others, such as St. Bernard) thought were located there - such as the Ark of the Covenant. It may be that even this is symbolic and Gnostic language - the eternal search for our own divinity.
Following the dubious excavations, both the Templars and the Cistercians
under St. Bernard grew in immense wealth.
Great building works were carried out across Europe - all hiding secret symbolism of the snake and all using the architectural skills discovered while on their travels in the Middle East. Greatest of all, however, is the symbolism that was brought back with them, which invaded European culture like a contagious virus, seeping into and onto its buildings and works of art and keeping alive an ancient tradition for us to one day rediscover.
The hollow and nonliteral Brazen Pillars of Hiram became the twin pillars of the later Masons - who, like Moses as the emergent serpent, emerged from the Templars.

manuscripts from Rennes Le Château, also thought to have been found inside a

secret, but not one that can be held in the hand.
Now it is time to take a look at another exterior source of the modern Freemasons to see if there are any parallel influences at play: the Dionysiac Architects we have just mentioned.

These are said by Masonic historians to be the prime originators of their
guilds.
A secretive group or secret society with doctrines said by Manly P.
Hall (in Masonic, Hermetic, Quabbalistic & Rosicrucian Symbolical
Philosophy) to be similar to the Freemasons. They are thought to have been
great builders, reminiscent of the idea of the great architectural Nagas who
escaped India.
It was supposedly this secret society, under Hiram Abiff, who built the Temple of Solomon and erected the great brass pillars now seen as Boaz and Joachim in Masonry. They were also known as the Roman Collegia and were said to have wandered around like the medieval Masons, building such fantastic places as the Temple of Diana at Ephesus (John Weisse, The Obelisk and Freemasonry).
Weisse also points out that the Collegia influenced the Islamic building efforts, which were later to become a turning point in Western European architecture after the crusades and possibly via the Collegia’s influence over the Templars, amongst others.
These Collegia were also thought to have been known before the Romans in Greece and were said to have worshipped the serpentine Bacchus. Considering the Masonic fascination with the Druids, there is little wonder that the infamous historian and archaeologist William Stukely believed them to have been the builders of Stonehenge and other ancient monuments.

Many Masonic
writers love to associate themselves with the Druids and we find that they,
“had a high veneration for the Serpent. Their great god Hu, was typified by that reptile”.(George Oliver, Signs and Symbols)
If it is true that the Dionysiac Architects and the Bacchus/Dionysus-worshipping
Greek and Roman Collegia, were among the originators of
the Freemasons, then it is highly likely that they were linked also with the
serpent-worshipping Druids who were also known as Adders or Snakes.
They were all a later showing of the worldwide serpent cult - the same as those in India, Egypt, and elsewhere, who all had fantastic building skills and held secrets of the true and hidden Gnostic traditions. Today we can still see a remnant of this great architectural, serpent-worshipping and secretive cult in the Masons.

As George Oliver points out,
“The Serpent is universally esteemed a legitimate symbol of Freemasonry,” and now we see its history is worldwide, and some would say justifiably kept alive within the initiated Freemasons.

Linear and Lateral Consciousness
by Rich Armstrong
August 8, 2013
from WakingTimes Website
Throughout our world and, indeed, the entire universe all is governed by two polar opposite forces. These forces are namely Linear and Lateral Consciousness.
The previous sentence can also be reduced to the following statement… Time and Timelessness.
When all the layers of the onion are peeled away, this is what we will find. Linear and Lateral Consciousness are expressions of opposing forces of time. In fact we could actually say that humans are mere expressions of time.
Linear Consciousness is the time that most people recognize; it is the sequential; it is a period of time that is added to the previous period of time in a linear precise order that dictates our "future" organization. It is Newtonian in outlook, total causality and effect.
Lateral is non- linear; it is the opposite. It does not "add on" to the last period of time simply because it is timeless. It is and always was, and always will be. It has pushed into the three dimensions of space simultaneously, no time sequence lapsed in doing so. It is pure timelessness.
We have all experienced timelessness; it is called intuition. Intuition is the gut response to any given situation.
It is the asking of a question and the receiving of an answer simultaneously, pure timeless and beyond explanation. This is actually universal default lateral consciousness. It can be tapped into at any time if need be, just by trusting gut instinct.
These two forces of time battle within each and every person. Everybody has both forces within them and every person has these two forces to appease which they do through fulfilling the need for significance and love.
Significance fulfills the demand from Linear Consciousness; Love fulfills the demand from Lateral Consciousness. Each comes with its own motive: the motive of fear being Linear Consciousness and the motive of love being Lateral Consciousness.
The two forces of time actually shape our minds and also our bodies.
Again, it is the balancing of the two opposing forces that bring physical and mental well-being in life.
Lateral Consciousness:
Motive of Love
The need for Love/Contribution
Linear Consciousness:
Motive of Fear
The need for Significance/Growth
Linear Consciousness
Linear Consciousness is essentially conscious ego mind that lives in fear of ego death.
A person expressing Linear Consciousness is more associated to themselves and their ego; unbeknownst to themselves, they have a higher level of tension deep at the core that may not be readily visible on the surface.
This "tension" is a kin to a piece of string being pulled tightly, as the string becomes straighter it becomes tenser. Hold the thought of that string in your mind, for that is what happens to the person who is motivated by fear.
They can become tense, rigid, inflexible and controlling.
This is the expression of fear based thinking that has been induced by the dominance of future uncertainty. This tension causes anxiety, which sets the internal clock speed of the individual to a faster pace. This internal clock is actually the metabolic rate of the individual.
The close association to future uncertainty sets the metabolic rate to a higher setting. Linear Consciousness expresses itself as "lean to slim" morphic profile, what we will describe as "straight" in profile. This is also reflected in thinking, which is also straight and direct, sometimes rigid and inflexible.
Control is key to Linear Consciousness - control of movement (internal and external), control of emotion, control of resources and reserves. Power through knowledge, control through knowledge of all events occurring within the universe (science).
Beyond what can be controlled is deemed chaos. Self-preservation physically, mentally and emotionally are first priority. For ego/self- identification, the first question asked in the mind is:
How will I survive?
For commercial purposes, the first question is:
What's in it for me?
Linear Consciousness is defined by time and space and consumption of energy. Linear Consciousness is distant (space) by nature and will always create time for itself.
It stands alone from the crowd in its own time and space. It is identified as individual.
Lateral Consciousness
Lateral Consciousness is almost sub/super consciousness, deemed as default consciousness, far less individually identified, even to the point of non - identity.
As such, it is more sacrificial by nature as the death of ego is less feared and held in less value, more willing to lose owing to a less association to self, and a greater association to universal default consciousness.
People who keep a closer association to Lateral Consciousness have a knowing about themselves and their relationships with Mother Earth, the Universe and all within it, that transcends science and description. Lateral Consciousness only avails itself to those who express the motive of love.
For those whose motive is fear are on a frequency that simply struggles to respond to universal stimuli.
Lateral Consciousness is less concerned with control as aforementioned.
There is a timeless invisible "knowing" of the innate relationship between the being and universal forces beyond their control, and trust and faith in the relationship is intrinsic.
Because of this "non-linear" relationship that, with the best will in the world, is indescribable, the people who express Lateral Consciousness are far more relaxed by nature, so the expression in bodily form is also more relaxed. "Lateral" spread is created, which is in contrast to the "straight" tense Linear Consciousness.
Lateral Consciousness already knows that this sub/super conscious relationship to the universe is generous, and so the first primary question that goes through the mind of a lateral is:
"How may I be of service?"
Lateral consciousness is sacrificial by nature almost like an ambassador for the universe, if you will; it is flexible in approach and does not seek to control.

Time and space warp around Lateral Consciousness much like Einstein's theory of past and future being simultaneous and beyond reason.
There is more certainty about people who express the motive of love. Don't ask me to explain why; it just is.

Ideology prevents action
The world is always close to catastrophe. But it seems to be closer now. Seeing this approaching catastrophe, most of us take shelter in idea. We think that this catastrophe, this crisis, can be solved by an ideology. Ideology is always an impediment to direct relationship, which prevents action. We want peace only as an idea, but not as an actuality. We want peace on the verbal level which is only on the thinking level, though we proudly call it the intellectual level. But the word peace is not peace. Peace can only be when the confusion which you and another make ceases. We are attached to the world of ideas and not to peace. We search for new social and political patterns and not for peace; we are concerned with the reconciliation of effects and not in putting aside the cause of war. This search will bring only answers conditioned by the past. This conditioning is what we call knowledge, experience; and the new changing facts are translated, interpreted, according to this knowledge. So, there is conflict between what is and the experience that has been. The past, which is knowledge, must ever be in conflict with the fact, which is ever in the present. So, this will not solve the problem but will perpetuate the conditions which have created the problem.

Man, Nature, and the
Nature of Man, 1991
I grew up in a devout and practicing Roman Catholic family with
Purzel, a fearless and high-energy dachshund.
He, as with all the other, much larger
dogs that subsequently accompanied me through life, showed plenty of
affection, curiosity, playfulness, aggression, anger, shame and
fear. Yet my church teaches that whereas animals, as God's
creatures, ought to be treated well, they do not possess an immortal
soul. Only humans do.
Even as a child, to me this belief felt
intuitively wrong. These gorgeous creatures had feelings, just like
I did.
Why deny them? Why would God
resurrect people but not dogs?
This core Christian belief in human
exceptionalism
did not make any sense to me. Whatever consciousness and
mind are and no matter how they relate to the brain and the rest of
the body, I felt that the same principle must hold for people and
dogs and, by extension, for other animals as well.
It was only later, at university, that I became acquainted with Buddhism and its emphasis on the universal nature of mind.
It was only later, at university, that I became acquainted with Buddhism and its emphasis on the universal nature of mind.
Indeed, when I spent a week with His
Holiness the Dalai Lama earlier in 2013 [see "The
Brain of Buddha," Consciousness Redux; Scientific
American Mind, July/August 2013], I noted how often he talked about
the need to reduce the suffering of "all living beings" and not just
"all people."
My readings in philosophy brought me to
panpsychism, the view that mind (psyche) is found everywhere (pan).
Panpsychism is one of the oldest of all
philosophical doctrines extant and was put forth by the ancient
Greeks, in particular Thales of Miletus and Plato.
Philosopher Baruch Spinoza and
mathematician and universal genius Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz,
who laid down the intellectual foundations for the Age of
Enlightenment, argued for panpsychism, as did philosopher
Arthur Schopenhauer, father of American psychology William
James, and Jesuit paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin.
It declined in popularity with the rise
of positivism in the 20th century.
As a natural scientist, I find a version of panpsychism modified for the 21st century to be the single most elegant and parsimonious explanation for the universe I find myself in.
As a natural scientist, I find a version of panpsychism modified for the 21st century to be the single most elegant and parsimonious explanation for the universe I find myself in.
There are three broad reasons why
panpsychism is appealing to the modern mind.
We Are All Nature's Children
The past two centuries of scientific progress have made it difficult to sustain a belief in human exceptionalism.
Consider my Bernese mountain dog, Ruby, when she yelps, whines, gnaws at her paw, limps and then comes to me, seeking aid: I infer that she is in pain because under similar conditions I behave in similar ways (sans gnawing).
Physiological measures of pain confirm
this inference - injured dogs, just like people, experience an
elevated heart rate and blood pressure and release stress hormones
into their bloodstream.
I'm not saying that a dog's pain is
exactly like human pain, but dogs - as well as other animals - not
only react to noxious stimuli but also consciously experience pain.
All species - bees, octopuses, ravens, crows, magpies, parrots, tuna, mice, whales, dogs, cats and monkeys - are capable of sophisticated, learned, nonstereotyped behaviors that would be associated with consciousness if a human were to carry out such actions. Precursors of behaviors thought to be unique to people are found in many species.

Precursors of behaviors thought to be unique to people are found in many species.
For instance,
bees are capable
of recognizing specific faces from photographs, can
communicate the location and quality of food sources to their
sisters via the waggle dance, and can navigate complex mazes with
the help of cues they store in short-term memory (for instance,
"after arriving at a fork, take the exit marked by the color at the
entrance").
Bees can fly several kilometers and
return to their hive, a remarkable navigational performance. And a
scent blown into the hive can trigger a return to the site where the
bees previously encountered this odor.
This type of associative memory was
famously described by Marcel Proust in
À la Recherche du Temps
Perdu. Other animals can recognize themselves, know
when their conspecifics observe them, and can lie and cheat.
Some people point to language and the associated benefits as being the unique defining feature of consciousness. Conveniently, this viewpoint rules out all but one species, Homo sapiens (which has an ineradicable desire to come out on top), as having sentience.

Yet there is little reason to deny
consciousness to animals, preverbal infants [see "The
Conscious Infant," Consciousness Redux; Scientific
American Mind, September/October 2013] or patients with severe
aphasia, all of whom are mute.
None other than Charles Darwin, in the last book he published, in the year preceding his death, set out to learn how far earthworms "acted consciously and how much mental power they displayed."
None other than Charles Darwin, in the last book he published, in the year preceding his death, set out to learn how far earthworms "acted consciously and how much mental power they displayed."
Studying their feeding and sexual
behaviors for several decades - Darwin was after all a naturalist
with uncanny powers of observation - he concluded that there was no
absolute threshold between lower and higher animals, including
humans, that assigned higher mental powers to one but not to the
other.
The nervous systems of all these creatures are highly complex.
The nervous systems of all these creatures are highly complex.
Their constitutive proteins, genes,
synapses, cells and neuronal circuits are as sophisticated,
variegated and specialized as anything seen in the human brain. It
is difficult to find anything exceptional about the human brain.
Even its size is not so special, because elephants, dolphins and
whales have bigger brains.
Only an expert neuroanatomist, armed
with a microscope, can tell a grain-size piece of cortex of a mouse
from that of a monkey or a human. Biologists emphasize this
structural and behavioral continuity by distinguishing between
nonhuman and human animals. We are all nature's children.
Given the lack of a clear and compelling Rubicon separating simple from complex animals and simple from complex behaviors, the belief that only humans are capable of experiencing anything consciously seems preposterous.
Given the lack of a clear and compelling Rubicon separating simple from complex animals and simple from complex behaviors, the belief that only humans are capable of experiencing anything consciously seems preposterous.
A much more reasonable assumption is
that until proved otherwise, many, if not all, multicellular
organisms experience pain and pleasure and can see and hear the
sights and sounds of life.
For brains that are smaller and less
complex, the creatures' conscious experience is very likely to be
less nuanced, less differentiated and more elemental.
Even a worm has perhaps the vaguest
sense of being alive. Of course, each species has its own unique
sensorium, matched to its ecological niche. Not every creature
has ears to hear and eyes to see.
Yet all are capable of having at least
some subjective feelings.
The Austere Appeal of Panpsychism
Taken literally, panpsychism is the belief that everything is "enminded." All of it. Whether it is a brain, a tree, a rock or an electron.
Everything that is physical also
possesses an interior mental aspect. One is objective - accessible
to everybody - and the other phenomenal - accessible only to the
subject.
That is the sense of the quotation by
British-born Buddhist scholar
Alan Watts with which I began
this essay.
I will defend a narrowed, more nuanced view:
I will defend a narrowed, more nuanced view:
namely that any complex system, as defined below, has the basic attributes of mind and has a minimal amount of consciousness in the sense that it feels like something to be that system.
If the system falls apart, consciousness
ceases to be; it doesn't feel like anything to be a broken system.
And the more complex the system, the larger the repertoire of
conscious states it can experience.
My subjective experience (and yours, too, presumably), the Cartesian "I think, therefore I am," is an undeniable certainty, one strong enough to hold the weight of philosophy. But from whence does this experience come? Materialists invoke something they call emergentism to explain how consciousness can be absent in simple nervous systems and emerge as their complexity increases.

But from whence does this experience come? Materialists invoke something they call emergentism to explain how consciousness can be absent in simple nervous systems and emerge as their complexity increases.
Consider the wetness of water, its
ability to maintain contact with surfaces. It is a consequence of
intermolecular interactions, notably hydrogen bonding among nearby
water molecules.
One or two molecules of H2O
are not wet, but put
gazillions together at the right temperature
and pressure, and wetness emerges. Or see how the laws of heredity
emerge from the molecular properties of DNA, RNA and proteins.
By the same process, mind is supposed to
arise out of sufficiently complex brains.
Yet the mental is too radically different for it to arise gradually from the physical. This emergence of subjective feelings from physical stuff appears inconceivable and is at odds with a basic precept of physical thinking, the Ur-conservation law - ex nihilo nihil fit.
Yet the mental is too radically different for it to arise gradually from the physical. This emergence of subjective feelings from physical stuff appears inconceivable and is at odds with a basic precept of physical thinking, the Ur-conservation law - ex nihilo nihil fit.
So if there is nothing there in the
first place, adding a little bit more won't make something. If a
small brain won't be able to feel pain, why should a large brain be
able to feel the god-awfulness of a throbbing toothache? Why should
adding some neurons give rise to this ineffable feeling?
The phenomenal hails from a kingdom
other than the physical and is subject to different laws. I see no
way for the divide between unconscious and conscious states to be
bridged by bigger brains or more complex neurons.
A more principled solution is to assume that consciousness is a basic feature of certain types of so-called complex systems (defined in some universal, mathematical manner). And that complex systems have sensation, whereas simple systems have none. This reasoning is analogous to the arguments made by savants studying electrical charge in the 18th century.

And that complex systems have sensation, whereas simple systems have none. This reasoning is analogous to the arguments made by savants studying electrical charge in the 18th century.
Charge is not an emergent property of
living things, as originally thought when electricity was discovered
in the twitching muscles of frogs.
There are no uncharged particles that in
the aggregate produce an electrical charge. Elementary particles
either have some charge, or they have none. Thus, an electron has
one negative charge, a proton has one positive charge and a photon,
the carrier of light, has zero charge. As far as chemistry and
biology are concerned, charge is an intrinsic property of these
particles.
Electrical charge does not emerge from
non-charged matter.
It is the same, goes the logic, with
consciousness. Consciousness comes with organized chunks of matter.
It is immanent in the organization of the system. It is a property
of complex entities and cannot be further reduced to the action of
more elementary properties. We have reached the ground floor of
reductionism.
Yet, as traditionally conceived, panpsychism suffers from two major flaws. One is known as the problem of aggregates.
Yet, as traditionally conceived, panpsychism suffers from two major flaws. One is known as the problem of aggregates.
Philosopher John Searle of the
University of California, Berkeley, expressed it recently:
"Consciousness cannot spread over the universe like a thin veneer of jam; there has to be a point where my consciousness ends and yours begins."
Indeed, if consciousness is everywhere,
why should it not animate the iPhone, the Internet or the United
States of America? Furthermore, panpsychism does not explain why a
healthy brain is conscious, whereas the same brain, placed inside a
blender and reduced to goo, would not be.
That is, it does not explain how
aggregates combine to produce specific conscious experience.
Integrated Panpsychism
These century-old arguments bring me to the conceptual framework of the integrated information theory (IIT) of psychiatrist and neuroscientist Giulio Tononi of the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
It postulates that conscious experience
is a fundamental aspect of reality and is identical to a particular
type of information - integrated information. Consciousness depends
on a physical substrate but is not reducible to it.
That is, my experience of seeing an
aquamarine blue is inexorably linked to my brain but is different
from my brain.
Any system that possesses some nonzero amount of integrated information experiences something. Let me repeat: any system that has even one bit of integrated information has a very minute conscious experience.
IIT makes two principled assumptions.
Any system that possesses some nonzero amount of integrated information experiences something. Let me repeat: any system that has even one bit of integrated information has a very minute conscious experience.
IIT makes two principled assumptions.
First, conscious states are highly differentiated; they are informationally very rich. You can be conscious of an uncountable number of things. Think of all the frames from all the movies that you have ever seen or that have ever been filmed or that will be filmed! Each frame, each view, is a specific conscious percept.
Second, each such experience is highly integrated. You cannot force yourself to see the world in black and white; its color is an integrated part of your view. Whatever information you are conscious of is wholly and completely presented to your mind; it cannot be subdivided. Underlying this unity of consciousness is a multitude of causal interactions among the relevant parts of your brain. If parts of the brain become fragmented and balkanized, as occurs in deep sleep or in anesthesia, consciousness fades.
To be conscious, then, you need to be a
single, integrated entity with a large repertoire of highly
differentiated states.
Even if the hard disk on my laptop
exceeds in capacity my lifetime memories, none of its information is
integrated. The family photos on my Mac are not linked to one
another.
The computer does not know that the boy
in those pictures is my son as he matures from a toddler to an
awkward teenager and then a graceful adult. To my computer, all
information is equally meaningless, just a vast, random tapestry of
0s and 1s. Yet I derive meaning from these images because my
memories are heavily cross-linked. And the more interconnected, the
more meaningful they become.
These ideas can be precisely expressed in the language of mathematics using notions from information theory such as entropy. Given a particular brain, with its neurons in a particular state - these neurons are firing while those ones are quiet - one can precisely compute the extent to which this network is integrated.
These ideas can be precisely expressed in the language of mathematics using notions from information theory such as entropy. Given a particular brain, with its neurons in a particular state - these neurons are firing while those ones are quiet - one can precisely compute the extent to which this network is integrated.
From this calculation, the theory
derives a single number, Φ (pronounced "fi") [see "A
Theory of Consciousness," Consciousness Redux; Scientific
American Mind, July/August 2009].
Measured in bits, Φ denotes the size of
the conscious repertoire associated with the network of causally
interacting parts being in one particular state.
Think of Φ as the synergy of the system.
The more integrated the system is, the more synergy it has and the
more conscious it is. If individual brain regions are too isolated
from one another or are interconnected at random, Φ will be low. If
the organism has many neurons and is richly endowed with synaptic
connections, Φ will be high.
Basically, Φ captures the quantity of
consciousness. The quality of any one experience - the way in which
red feels different from blue and a color is perceived differently
from a tone - is conveyed by the informational geometry associated
with Φ.
The theory assigns to any one brain
state a shape, a crystal, in a fantastically high-dimensional
qualia space. This crystal is the
system viewed from within. It is the voice in the head, the light
inside the skull. It is everything you will ever know of the world.
It is your only reality. It is the quiddity of experience.
The dream of the lotus eater, the
mindfulness of the meditating monk and the agony of the cancer
patient all feel the way they do because of the shape of the
distinct crystals in a space of a trillion dimensions - truly a
beatific vision.
The water of integrated
information (IIT) is turned into the wine of experience.
Integrated information makes very specific predictions about which brain circuits are involved in consciousness and which ones are peripheral players (even though they might contain many more neurons, their anatomical wiring differs).
Integrated information makes very specific predictions about which brain circuits are involved in consciousness and which ones are peripheral players (even though they might contain many more neurons, their anatomical wiring differs).
The theory has most recently been used
to build a consciousness meter to assess, in a quantitative manner,
the extent to which anesthetized subjects or severely brain-injured
patients, such as Terri Schiavo, who died in Florida in 2005,
are truly not conscious or do have some conscious experiences but
are unable to signal their pain and discomfort to their loved ones
[see "A
Consciousness Meter," Consciousness Redux; Scientific
American Mind, March/April 2013].
IIT addresses the problem of aggregates by postulating that only "local maxima" of integrated information exist (over elements and spatial and temporal scales):
IIT addresses the problem of aggregates by postulating that only "local maxima" of integrated information exist (over elements and spatial and temporal scales):
my consciousness, your consciousness, but nothing in between.
That is, every person living in the U.S.
is, self by self, conscious, but there is no superordinate
consciousness of the U.S. population as a whole.
Unlike classical panpsychism, not all physical objects have a Φ that is different from zero. Only integrated systems do. A bunch of disconnected neurons in a dish, a heap of sand, a galaxy of stars or a black hole - none of them are integrated. They have no consciousness. They do not have mental properties.
Last, IIT does not discriminate between squishy brains inside skulls and silicon circuits encased in titanium.

Provided that the causal relations among
the circuit elements, transistors and other logic gates give rise to
integrated information, the system will feel like something.
Consider humankind's largest and most complex artifact, the
Internet. It consists of billions of computers linked together using
optical fibers and copper cables that rapidly instantiate specific
connections using ultrafast communication protocols.
Each of these processors in turn is made
out of a few billion transistors.
Taken as a whole, the Internet has
perhaps 1019 transistors, about the number of
synapses in the brains of 10,000 people. Thus, its sheer number of
components exceeds that of any one human brain. Whether or not the
Internet today feels like something to itself is completely
speculative. Still, it is certainly conceivable.
When I talk and write about panpsychism, I often encounter blank stares of incomprehension.
When I talk and write about panpsychism, I often encounter blank stares of incomprehension.
Such a belief violates people's strongly
held intuition that sentience is something only humans and a few
closely related species possess. Yet our intuition also fails when
we are first told as kids that a whale is not a fish but a mammal or
that people on the other side of the planet do not fall off because
they are upside down.
Panpsychism is an elegant explanation
for the most basic of all brute facts I encounter every morning on
awakening: there is subjective experience. Tononi's theory offers a
scientific, constructive, predictive and mathematically precise form
of panpsychism for the 21st century.
It is a gigantic step in the final
resolution of the ancient mind-body problem.
